Guest blogger, Alex, our youngest padawan explains in his own words what working from home in the current climate means for him.

workingfromhomeWorking from home has given me a different sense of freedom to that of the office. The ability to roam your house after completing a job gives a sense of invigoration. When client issues arise, I find the lack of social interaction with colleagues and clients restricting, although the ability to always be in contact via messaging apps and video chats provides much needed help in keeping communications running smoothly but it doesn’t provide quite the sociable experience that office work would.

Apart from a less sociable time, working at home does allow for a slightly more relaxed experience. Being in the safety of my own home does mean that the worry for travel and reaching the office in time is non-existent. Knowing that all my resources are available from my bed relieves the pressure of tardiness and allows for extra scheduling and action to be done after hours to support my workload which has helped relieve any worry over deadlines and accessing resources.

I have been able to develop different aspects of my working abilities. Despite not meeting clients physically I have been able to develop my skills in communication through my increased use of the phone. Remote support software allowing access to client systems has also been a bonus. As well as my communications skills there has been a bigger emphasis on the running and maintaining of client servers. I have been able to gain more hands-on experience, through increased responsibility, in assuring that all client servers are functioning correctly. From analysing backup activity to assuring clients can connect remotely, working from home has allowed me to work on different aspects of the job. I would like to think I am becoming a more knowledgeable and successful employee. Through working at home I have been able to develop a larger responsibility than before when I was working in the office which has since improved my confidence to work on different client incidents and operate in and out with the office.

One issue which has become clear for me is that I have started not interpreting my home as a workspace. Being at home can lead to many different distractions for all sorts of people, for myself finding my room as an area of work early on was a bit of a struggle. Over time I have since been able to mould into my new surroundings feeling more comfortable and less distracted which has hopefully helped develop my ability to work in many different areas and be comfortable to work from home when required again.


Snow ScootersHello lovely readers and welcome to the current goings on at ComTech.

As I write this the dreaded lurgy has made an appearance at ComTech HQ and sent John scurrying to his bed. Chris has been locked in his mancave for 2 days with his germs whilst Kenneth and Jay are bravely soldiering on. Alex is unaware what he is coming back to tomorrow!!

Over the last couple of weeks some very interesting clients have come on board, which is keeping the team nice and busy. We have had a couple of Office 365 migrations on the go too with some challenging scenarios involving large amounts of data to be uploaded. If everything was easy then it would be no fun would it?

Our order book is filling up nicely, with a couple of new enquiries per week since the new year. Not only is it healthy but there is a wide variety of client coming through, which is nice to have as this allows us to work with varying technologies. It also allows the younger members of the team to get their teeth into stuff they haven’t done before.

The big elephant-in-the-room, over the last couple of weeks, has been the end of support for Windows 7. Most of our clients had already made the transition to Windows 10 and Jay is well on top of sorting the migration for the remainder. He must hate the look of that setup page now!

Even though we are a growing business, we can’t take our eye of the ball and forget about our existing clients. They are our lifeblood and without them there would be no ComTech. To this end the entire team (from management down) stills engages with our existing clients. If Chris or John needs to step in and take the support call due to heavy workloads then step in they will – and do!

Finally, our new office is progressing well and everyone is itching to get in so that we actually have space – and, of course, have a go on the putting green and basketball hoop.

three comtech teddiesHopefully you all had a nice and relaxing new year and are now ready to face the challenges of 2020 head on.

We were very busy before the Christmas break with Chris at times on the verge of pulling out what hair he has left. The team, as always though, pulled together and any issues that arose were soon sorted out.

During that time, our networking efforts dropped off the radar a bit but we aim to step up the pace this year – the hot chocolate & cream are definitely calling! Come and talk to us at FAB, Breakfast Buzz, Business IQ and/or Clubfive55 as well as other local events and venues or if you fancy a coffee just get in touch – you’ll find we’re a friendly bunch.

We are still looking forward to our new office this year, with an entry date of early march on the cards. With more space available in the new office the team have started to look and see what furnishings are required. Jay is after a basketball hoop, Kenneth wants a putting green, Alex wants a bigger desk whilst Chris is still aiming for a climbing wall and a pool table and is determined to drive Herbie into the office and park at his desk at the earliest opportunity too! John, as always, is being the cool head and has started with workshop tables and desks. There is talk of a TV / monitor going on the wall too.

Welcome to our new clients, who have already signed up this week and with more prospects in the pipeline these are definitely exciting times to be working at ComTech.

Very busy times here at ComTech HQ.

Jay, our new Modern Apprentice, is three weeks in the door and, due to the sheer volume of work, is already taking calls from clients and helping them out remotely.  We are very impressed with the way he has bedded in so far.

Due to the sheer volume of work in the pipeline heading our way we are expanding. We are interviewing candidates this week for a new modern apprenticeship. The lucky person will join a very unique team where they will be exposed to various aspects of IT and be expected to eat large amounts of desserts!!

TankDrivingChallengeHello there happy readers and welcome to the current goings on at ComTech.

There have been quite a few things going on since the last blog. The most important is the search for new staff members to join our team. Our Foundation Apprentice Alexander starts today and will be joining us for two afternoons per week whilst still studying at Falkirk College. Hopefully we can add to his existing knowledge (even moved the office around to fit him in!!) and even treat him to some of the legendary lunch meetings we have at ComTech

Along with Alexander we are still searching for a modern apprentice to join us full time which would significantly enhance our support capacity going forward. If you can think of anyone who might like to work with us please share.

Along with new staff we have been taking care of the existing ones with a tank driving experience at Tank Drive Challenge Scotland. Awesome afternoon and lots of fun which we would highly recommend.

Believe it or not we have also been doing some work. Websites have been getting built and existing ones updated. Microsoft Windows has been getting updated and breaking things which we have then sorted (way to often!!). Servers have been getting fixed, laptops replaced and new PC’s installed. No ComTech IT blog would be complete without some Linux niggles to get fixed either.

herbie the horrible beetleSo what have we been upto then? Loads!!

In the last couple of weeks we have been helping a client in Callandar with hosted desktop issues, along with sorting out a broadband migration to BT. This has been a good learning experience for us with respect to the LAN-to-LAN VPN, which is required to get their printers working within the hosted desktop environment.

Our Linux network address space issue has mostly been sorted with just a couple of things to mop up. Again, this has been a valuable learning experience for the entire team and credit to everyone for pulling together when things threatened to go pear-shaped.

We have also got a couple of clients set up on Office365 for their emails over the last couple of weeks. Their contacts, calendars and emails are now fully synced across all the devices they use which has gone down very well. Chris and Kenneth are also continuing with their studies which will increase the collective knowledge of the team.

Kenneth and John are still badgering away on a couple of website projects and a couple of new clients have switched over to our domain hosting service. Did I mention we do websites and website hosting?

Chris has finally got back on track with the business academy stuff which is now starting to deliver. Thanks to all the team who gave him a kick up the backside when he considered stopping the business development stuff. We run a very open team here at ComTech so when decisions affect everyone all opinions are listened to not just the management’s ones.

Finally, we are in the very early stages of going shopping for another apprentice due to the current and projected workload.

the bears at workChris has been back on the networking scene after a forced break due to the sheer volume of work we had on.  Boy was he happy to get his hot chocolate fix!  He attended the second session of the Business Academy with The Tannahill Partnership, learning about new approaches to taking the company forward.  If that wasn’t enough, he has also been delving into the world of Office365 sorting out issues for clients.

Kenneth, our worthy apprentice, has been running around visiting clients installing new PCs, resetting existing ones, sorting out a couple of Linux issues and everything in between. To top it off, he is also getting ready to start the next chapter of his formal training, which should see him earning his SQCF level 8 in IT.  He has also been getting his hands dirty and doing a great job with som "webby" stuff.

John has been getting down and dirty sorting out the numerous Microsoft Office issues we have had along with updating websites, sorting out backups and catching up on some dreaded (boo hoo) admin tasks.

Last, but not least, it’s the bears who installed a Windows Server 2016 Essentials server for a client last week but of course everyone knows their main job is to look cool and promote ComTech, which they do fantastically!

We are not a fan of Microsoft this month as we can’t remember a time we have had to fix the software so many times in one month.  Please Microsoft, if we ask nicely, can Office start behaving itself?

As we move into the school holidays things usually start to quiet down a bit but we don’t think that is going to happen this year.  We move into a bigger office on July 1st, have a network to redesign the following week and we have a few new potential clients on the radar.  Onwards and upwards!!

johnandkennethThe numbers are in and we did 105 support tickets last month - almost a record: second only to January when it was 116! With Kenneth sunning himself somewhere in Europe for 3 weeks it was down to John, myself and the bears to hold the fort and glad to say we muddled through.

Chris and the bears had a lovely visit to Inverness with Herbie a couple of weeks back and decided to take the mountain bike up the Drummochter Hills on the way home. Answering calls from clients when carrying a 14kg bike up the mountains is definitely "interesting”.

John also had his own adventure when he headed up dirt tracks to a client's north of Aberfeldy earlier this week to install a couple of new PC`s. He might even have to wash his car!!

We are also moving office on the 1st July too. The current office is getting too small, especially since we are exploring the possibility of taking on a Foundation Apprentice through Forth Valley College. We're only moving down the corridor but the new office should give us a bit more space and somewhere for “newbie” to sit. Chris thinks he might even convince Kenneth and John to get climbing holds on the wall too — every office should have a “play” area, right?

We have a couple of new server installs coming up, a complete network redesign on the cards and quite a few potential clients in the crosshairs. As always there will, no doubt, be lots of remote support issues to fix too. The order book is looking very healthy at the moment.

Need to get back networking too as Chris misses his hot chocolates!

May2019blogSo what have we been upto in the last couple of weeks? As it turns out quite a bit!!!

Our new apprentice Kenneth is currently sunning himself for 3 weeks on holidays but before he left he managed to finish his SQA level 6 in half the time expected. This is quite an achievement and shows his dedication.

For the record when you have been working as a team of 3 and then go down to 2 it does come as quite a shock to the system!!

We have also had 2 server fails which resulted in new hard drives and restoring from backups (we love backups!!). Never had any servers fail in 9 years and then two go down in 6 days.

On the same day as the second server failing we also had a Linux network go down which turned out to be from a lack of ip addresses on the network. We are looking to completely redesign the network over the summer but for the time being we are nursing the address space making sure clients can get online.

I have also started a Business Academy coaching program in Glasgow which should help to grow the business, take on more staff and generally have more money. First impressions are really positive so looking forward to the following 12 months.

We have started to pick up some new clients in the Callandar area which is new territory for us along with quite a few websites to build (yes we also build websites!!). We currently have over 50 clients on monthly support contracts and every client gets the same attention to detail and great customer service as the next, regardless of size.

The order book is looking good and most of our clients systems are in good health so we must be doing something right!!.

I used to work for an IT department at a well-known UK-based global insurance company.control room monering a network

One of the most important pieces of software was our network management system or NMS. This system monitored the network and alerted us when something went wrong. But because the network was designed to be fault tolerant, the users (usually!) did not notice when part of the system failed. So, the senior managers at the company were always bemoaning the cost of the network management system and any time we wanted to implement improvements the reaction was “but nothing ever goes wrong so why are we paying all this money for software that draws pretty graphs but adds nothing to the bottom line?” You can see where this is going can’t you?

Our network had at least two separate connections into each major branch location. If one of these failed, service to the location was unaffected.

Imagine if one of those lines failed and nobody knew about it. Service would continue pretty much as normal. But at some point in the future you can bet the other line would also fail. Then, chaos! The business would be severely impacted for the hours or even days required to locate and fix the fault. That’s where monitoring systems prove their worth. When one element fails, the support team can schedule a repair, the service remains unaffected and, importantly, prepared for the next single failure. Same goes for upgrades. One element can be taken out of service, upgraded, tested, and then reactivated and in this manner the whole network gets upgraded with no loss of service.

Can you say the same about your IT systems?

Fake news is highly topical just now, least of all due to President Trump’s infamous speeches and prolific tweets. It is easy to think that he is talking mince but maybe, once in a while, he is not wrong – who knows?

camper vanI was at a networking meeting last week when I was reminded by one of the attendees of the story of the guy who successfully sued the manufacturers of his motorhome because he crashed when, having set the cruise control to 70mph, he left the driving seat to make a cup of coffee. The motorhome, of course, according to the story, went off the road and overturned. He was subsequently awarded a humungus amount of cash by the court.

Despite the very low probability that he would have survived a crash at that speed, just how likely is that someone could be so stupid? Or that the courts would be so idiotic (well maybe the law is an ass!)

Another story was about a mother who was awarded a massive sum after she broke an ankle when she tripped over a toddler who was running amok in a store. The punch line is, of course, that the child in question was her own! Strangely enough this story was included in an episode of the TV drama Boston Legal (“Tabloid Nation,” original air date 8 April 2008).

So why are we so ready to believe in such nonsense?

Well, generally because it tends to reinforce our built-in prejudices – something the scientific community would call “confirmation bias”. In this case the stories illustrate how daft the legal system is – usually aimed at Health & Safety laws, often aimed at the USA legal system, where litigation seems to us Brits to be particularly aggressive. Something we all “know to be true.”

Great stories and who wouldn’t want them to be true? And, even if proven to be false, who cares – they’re just a bit of fun, right?

The trouble is that when we stop questioning things, we start to believe stuff that is simply not true and the more, shall we say unprofessional, marketing companies profit from our gullibility.

The Internet has made the spread of these so-called Urban Myths much faster and wider than ever before and Facebook in particular seems to be rife with hoaxes and untruths like the recent one that warns not to read posts by a particular person or he will hack you (not possible). The goal seems to be to get us share it with as many people as we can.

But the Internet also provides a ready means to check them out – and I would urge you do so before deciding to pass on a funny, interesting, or possibly scary, anecdote.

The website is an excellent resource for quickly checking whether a particular story is fact or fiction. See for the truth about the two stories mentioned here and more besides. It can be really interesting, and much more fun, when you discover that the unlikely story you just heard is actually true!

We used to say, “don’t believe everything you read in the papers.” Perhaps now it must be “don’t believe everything you read on the Internet” (or hear at networking meetings!)

Working outdoors I was having a meeting with someone (lets call him Jeff) over coffee last week when the topic got onto where we actually do our work. Jeff is your typical office worker who has an office with 2 PCs, 2 printers and is in the office at 9am on the dot and does not leave until 6pm at the earliest. For 90% of his time he is bound to his desk as he thinks he is more productive that way. If that works for him I am not going to knock it but then we got talking about me.

My style of working is completely different to Jeff’s. I have set up ComTech to be a mobile business (just look at the top picture), which means I am not tied to a desk all day unless I choose to be. I have an office setup with my lovely iMac and multiple monitors but I also have a mobile setup which allows me to work from anywhere when the weather is nice or I just fancy a change of scenery. “But how can you help your clients if you are half way up a hill somewhere?” was Jeff’s response to this.

My mobile setup consists of the following:

  1. EE myfi (4G) and Three myfi (3G) which covers my internet needs.
  2. Lenovo 10 inch Android tablet and Acer Chromebook for actually doing the work.
  3. Teamviewer for remote access and Pulseway for remote monitoring of my clients systems
  4. Ankar powerpack for tablet and myfi (Chromebook has 12 hours of battery life)

This setup has proved its worth time and again and multiple clients have been helped when I am out and about. It is a standing joke with a lot of my clients that they ask “Where are you today then?” before they tell me what their problem is!

I am not saying this approach works for everything and yes, there are times when I have to sit at a desk to finish a piece of work or project but most times it gives me the flexibility to choose how and where I do my work. In almost 7 years of business I have never failed to respond to a client with the SLA of 4 hours and I am usually much quicker than this. For those times when boots are required on the ground the car is never that far away either.

Like I said earlier this approach works for me and makes my work / life balance more enjoyable but it may not work for everyone so let's start the conversation. What works for you?

Should broadband now be classed as a right? This is something I have been asked by quite a few people recently and to be honest I am still undecided. You see the problem is when I think of rights I think of shelter, food, water and that kind of stuff. People wanting to access their Facebook page and access to the internet in general doesn’t come in to it.

There is a problem here though, and it is a BIG problem, everything these days revolves around the internet in some shape or form. Everything that effects our daily life – food, money, transport etc is affected by the internet in some way so even if you aren’t online yourself you can guarantee that the things you use will have been influenced by it. Perhaps I am being narrow minded thinking people only want to use the internet for social reasons and should instead look at it as a tool to provide better opportunities for everyone.

So with more and more services going online are people without access to broadband being left behind? Probably is the answer to that but is the answer to give broadband the same status as shelter, food and water? I’m still not sure but if it does get it then enormous amounts of broadband investment is needed.


1980 portable computerIt’s a well-worn phrase that is used, perhaps overused, as an excuse for procrastination. Sometimes it is because business managers have other priorities and only think about their IT systems when something has already gone wrong or when they get an inkling that something is not quite right.

The cost of fixing a problem after it has already happened can often be much higher than preventing it in the first place. To quote Benjamin Franklin, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

The longer a problem is allowed to continue or a risk is not addressed, the more difficult (and expensive) it becomes to resolve. Like the untreated stone chip in the windscreen that eventually shatters, a minor annoyance that is easily resolved can quickly become a catastrophe. The chances are that if a computer is running slow or producing the occasional error message, you have already missed the opportunity to prevent the problem, or at least mitigate it.

So what should you do?

The most important thing to do is act in a timely manner. An independent health check will help you to identify potential issues in time to enable corrective or, better preventative, actions to be taken. Those actions may need to be implemented quickly and efficiently, so be honest about your own capabilities and availability – if you need help, get it!

Even if there are no major problems uncovered by the exercise, there is almost always a payback in terms of opportunities for improvement. This is where the external perspective can really help.

Finally, let me leave you with this thought: the 1980's portable computer in the image worked fine at the time...

flat tyre on a carA few weeks ago I went to an evening networking event about 50 minutes drive from home. Not long after I got onto the motorway, I noticed that the car was running a bit “rough”. It felt like a faint vibration from the engine. It wasn’t terrible, but knowing the car so well, I could feel it.

As I got near the venue, it got worse and soon I heard a loud rubbing and banging noise coming from the back end. Now I was worried.

I parked and as I suspected the rear tyre was flat. The event was due to start soon so I went into the hotel and found the conference room. I met some friends (and made some) had some coffee and did all the networky things.

By the time it was over, it was dark. It had started to rain; that drizzly dampness that seems so light but permeates everything. I got out the jack and extracted the spare from its hidey hole under the floor. I removed the wheel – it was heavy – did I say it had big, wide, alloys? Using the light from my phone, I finally got the wheel changed and inflated it to the correct pressure. I wrestled the old wheel into the boot, threw in the jack and other bits n’ bobs and headed home.

Turns out the tyre could not be salvaged. It had probably already been soft and leaking air when I left the house, hence the vibration I’d misdiagnosed earlier. If I’d known that, or recognised the symptoms I might have saved the tyre (and £120)!

So, what’s this got to do with IT?

I have now fitted a tyre pressure monitoring system. From inside the car, I can see the pressure in each tyre on a small display. It even alerts me with loud bleeping if it falls too low.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could be alerted when something started to go wrong with your computer – maybe even before there were any noticeable symptoms? It might save you money. It might even save your business. Maybe it will just give you peace of mind.

Well, you can.
